To the editor: The development of meningitis during cephalothin therapy was recently described in your journal (Ann Intern Med 78:347-351, 1973 and 79:135, 1973). Clustered cases occurred in April and May of 1972. The seven cases that can be placed exactly in time occurred since 1969. It seems reasonable to ask if the clustering in the Spring of 1972 can reasonably be ascribed to chance. The time during which the seven cases occurred can be divided into equal 3-month periods and the data analyzed by the Poisson distribution.
