This behemoth of a "handbook" is so well known and widely used in schools and research institutes that writing of its great value here would be a waste of space. In earlier editions, it did not, however, fill all the needs of biochemists and other laboratory workers in the biomedical sciences. The great growth of the biochemical disciplines called for a new handbook, and the same publishers wisely produced Handbook of Biochemistry (2nd Edition, 1970), which provided coverage of steroids, nucleic acids, biochemical genetics, and other fields not, or only poorly, represented in the parent handbook.
