MANUEL MARTINEZ-MALDONADO, M.D., F.A.C.P.
To the editor: Dr. Newcombe's letter (Ann Intern Med 70:605, 1973) relating his experience with the high prevalence of gouty arthritis in patients with polycystic kidney disease was of definite interest to us because it corroborates our 1965 report (1) of this association. We called attention to a family, of which we examined and studied 19 members of 3 generations, with polycystic kidney disease definitely diagnosed in 3 males and one female; 2 of the males had clear-cut acute gouty arthritis with hyperuricemia, and the other had hyperuricemia alone. One of the patients who had gouty arthritis had renal insufficiency.
