To the editor: After reading the article by Dr. Sagel and colleagues (Ann Intern Med 79:492-499, 1973), on glomerular lesions after group A streptococcal infections in children, I had to ask myself how far we as clinicians are permitted to go in the quest of scientific knowledge. Although one cannot question the intellectual integrity of the authors in seeking additional information about a disease entity, one can morally question exposing 20 asymptomatic children to the risks of percutaneous renal biopsy for no other reason than intellectual curiosity.
