An authoritative, detailed, well-documented monograph on the physiology of hearing, the ecology of noise, and the effect of noise on hearing and its prevention. The focus is on industrial, road, and aircraft noise; surprisingly, in view of its medical importance, virtually no attention is given to rock-band noise and the consequence of premature hearing loss. Some details in the text reflect the British authorship and will seem a bit exotic to the American reader, but generous use is made of published U.S. military experience with noise. Appendixes provide a glossary, tabulation of units, and reference needs such as audiometric standards.
