The drug spotlight is on digitalis in this issue because digitalis frequently causes serious adverse drug reactions (1, 2). The decision to begin or to continue digitalis therapy may be difficult. A decision should take into account the principle that potential benefits should clearly outweigh risks. The following questions are offered for the consideration of hospital pharmacy and therapeutic committees in their reviews of digitalis therapy. The term, digitalis, is here used to include all preparations of digitalis and its glycosides.
1. In patients with sinus rhythm, was there evidence of congestive heart failure when digitalis was prescribed?
