To the editor: I read with much interest your article on neuromuscular disease in primary hyperparathyroidism (Ann Intern Med 80:182-193, 1974). I wish to report a case of primary hyperparathyroidism observed by me as senior resident at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. The patient had a parathyroid carcinoma with extreme symptoms of neuromuscular disease not cured by excision of her lesion.
The patient, a 38-year-old woman, was transferred from a local nearby hospital to the nephrology service because of azotemia and a serum calcium of 14.8/100 ml. The patient suffered from hypercalcemia and subsequently developed severe septic shock that
