This monograph is a selected review of muscle contraction research. The focus is on the original work and concepts of the prolific group originally consisting of Doctors Watanabe Yagi, Shiokawa, and the author at Hokkaido University, Japan. Because of the gradual development of their ideas and the evolving and complex nature of the understanding of muscle contraction, Doctor Tonomura and his coworkers' published works are fragmented among many journals.
