A discussion of current age at menarche (onset of menstruation) of American women and analysis of variations in age at menarche associated with race, region, family income, population size of place of residence, educational level, height, weight, and skinfold thickness, as estimated from data gathered during the period 1960 to 1970.
Using a logistic model, current median age at menarche was estimated to be 12.76 years for girls in the age range of 6 to 17 years. Race differences in onset of menstruation were apparent. Black girls had an earlier median menarcheal age, 12.52 years, than white girls, 12.80 years.
