Physicians may well be incensed by the repeated charges of mismanagement, introduction of iatrogenic complications, nihilism, and even gross inhumanity directed against their treatment of patients with alcoholism. Elsewhere in this issue, Dr. John F. Burnum, Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, reports on the prevalence of "self-destructive habits" in 1000 consecutive patients seen in his practice during 5 months. He also reports on the outcome of his attempts to intervene in 219 cases of serious abuse of tobacco, alcohol, food, or drugs.
