In their preface Drs. Barua and Burrows disclaim having sought to impose a unified editorial approach on their 34 coauthors. Therefore, for all the merits of the book, its 25 chapters predictably vary in quality, overlap one another in content, and even take implicitly and explicitly conflicting points of view.
After an introductory outline of the advance of the El Tor pandemic, the book is divided into five sections: bacteriology, pathogenesis and pathophysiology, clinical aspects and management, immunology, and epidemiology and control.
