In the 5 years since its approval by the FDA, oral pentazocine has had extensive clinical use. It is an effective oral analgesic for both acute and chronic pain. Its other effects are similar in incidence and severity to most oral analgesics, with the exception of low-incidence, but disturbing, psychotomimetic effects, and its abuse potential is low.
