Although it is clear that the author is well read, his analysis of the new vast literature on systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) is so undiscerning and his command of connective tissue chemistry and of immunology so unsteady that the reader is confronted with an embarrassing plethora of errors, omissions, and inconsistencies that gravely detract from the value of this monograph review. It is unsettling, for example, to find that Dr. Barnett is unsure whether there is thickening of the skin in scleroderma (pp. 46-47).
