Although the role of the "law of the heart" in the normal regulation of cardiac function has been much debated since it was propounded sixty years ago, its underlying mechanism has seemed quite clear. Variations in the end-diastolic volume of the ventricle change the degree of overlap of the thick and thin filaments within the sarcomeres and alter the number of crossbridges formed following activation.
