The first edition of An Atlas of the Blood and Bone Marrow appeared in 1949. It had 321 pages as compared with 562 in the second edition. The reason for the difference is in part a smaller page size, plus the addition of four more chapters by contributing authorities. The Atlas was then, as it is now, a compendium of photomicrographs that depict various hematologic disorders in fixed tissue, as well as smears of peripheral blood and bone marrow prepared by conventional staining methods.
