To the editor: McCloskey and colleagues reported in the December 1974 issue (Ann Intern Med 81:788-791, 1974) their experience in the treatment of a large number of Corynebacterium diphtheriae carriers. Although I agree with the need to treat carriers and the recommendation that erythromycin be the preferred antibiotic, I feel it is important to mention several problems related to the C. diphtheriae carrier state and the evaluation of its treatment.
