Although gastric irradiation for the treatment of peptic ulcer was probably first used in 1909, it has never gained widespread acceptance as a major therapeutic modality in this disease. It has, however, been used by a number of clinicians over the years and the literature is quite substantial. The gastroenterology group at the University of Chicago clinics, beginning in 1937, has been at least one of the major groups in this country using, studying, and writing about this means of treatment.
