To the editor: In this journal, in 1967, Dr. W. Edmund Farrar, Jr. (1) reported the demonstration of transferable resistance to multiple antibiotics in association with an outbreak of shigellosis here in Atlanta. At that time, he suggested that continued widespread ampicillin use might result in increased prevalence of shigella organisms resistant to this antibiotic. As the cytoplasmic DNA particle (R factor) mechanism is capable of transferring resistance to a number of agents at one time, he also suggested that many strains of ampicillin-resistant Shigella might become resistant to other antibiotics as well.
