The autobiography of the German who carried out on himself the pioneering experiment in cardiac catheterization. But beyond Forssmann's own account of his opening the path for Cournand and Dickinson Richards and a later multitude of cardiac catheterizers, his story vividly shows the life in World War II of an army surgeon "on the side . . . with the severest defeat in history since the Punic Wars."
