Chronic inflammatory bowel disease, including chronic ulcerative colitis,
granulomatous colitis, and regional enteritis, seems formidable to the nonspecialist. Dr. Achord and his
collaborators present a simple but essentially complete picture of the clinical aspects of this group of
disease "cousins," to use Joseph Kirsner's term. In the many controversial areas the controversy is stated and
the author's opinion given. I might have less liking than Dr. Achord for elemental diets and gluten-free diets,
but gluten-free diet does tend to be constipating and in many patients elemental diet is well tolerated and
