The thirteen authors of these scholarly essays, dedicated to the memory of Ludwig Heilmeyer, the dominating figure in German hematology between 1945 and 1969, have made a most useful and interesting contribution to preserving and re-creating a sense of history in medicine and medical education, which is in danger of getting lost in the present rapid accumulation of new theoretical and practical medical accomplishments.
