In the 21 years since the original discovery of aldosterone, an impressive array of papers has appeared in the scientific literature to help us understand the chemistry, physiology, and pathophysiology of this most important adrenal mineralocorticoid. Dr. Ross undertook the onerous task of reviewing some 3500 articles that have appeared in the literature through 1973. The structure of the resulting text is conventional, dealing briefly with the history of the discovery of aldosterone but concentrating on the biosynthesis, metabolism, and physiologic properties of the hormone.
