The authors indicate that they have written "a reference manual for the practicing physician . . . designed to enable the clinician who is not an expert in electrocardiography to establish a diagnosis from an unknown electrocardiogram or to confirm his previously made diagnosis." Volume 1 consists of a brief introduction and description of the normal, followed by an extensive, thoughtfully constructed branching "logic" whereby, starting with a single abnormal observation about an electrocardiogram, a novice could be led to a correct electrocardiographic diagnosis.
