An historical review of the problems of common duct stones is presented here in a friendly, fatherly style. The history of disease recognition, development and application of roentgenographic methods, surgical approach to management, and the natural history of the disorder are all interesting, but tend toward excessive detail, especially in the selected case reports. The statistical data are inadequate, as is the discussion of the significance of the presented data. The more recent developments in endoscopic study and treatment of extra-hepatic biliary tract disease and the use of solvents for retained calculi are identified but are not discussed in depth.
