Recently, Professors Orville Horwitz, Joseph Magee, and colleagues gave a course, sponsored by the American College of Physicians, with the title "Specific Treatable Diseases." This book is based on the content of the course, and it has the strengths and weaknesses of a syllabus written by many individuals.
Fifteen chapters contain 335 articles written by 65 different authorities, of whom more than half are from the University of Pennsylvania. The within-chapter sections vary from mere listings or brief notes to 18-page essays covering all aspects of the subject. Each article begins with a fourfold index paragraph containing brief statements on
