To the editor: With regard to Dr. Bailar's article on mammography (Ann Intern Med 84:77-84, 1976), there would seem to exist another hazard that he did not mention, nor have I seen it considered elsewhere.
Those of us who have had no occasion to experience mammography may be unaware that in the process, the suspicious bosom is subjected to a substantial squeeze. It even sometimes hurts. Having been raised in a school that handles cancers gently lest dissemination occur, I have therefore become nervous about mammography.
