To the editor: During the past several months, there has been increasing world concern over the fate of Soviet Jewish physicians, scientists, and intellectuals who have sought to emigrate to Israel and elsewhere. Often dismissed from their jobs, barred from their laboratories, or demoted to menial tasks, they live with the fear that they will be arrested or imprisoned, perhaps in a mental hospital (1), or that permission to emigrate will never be granted to them. Some case histories will illustrate:
