Although there are several textbooks on antimicrobial chemotherapy, none are well recognized as the standard reference text; perhaps the section on antimicrobials in The Pharmacologic Basis of Therapeutics (Goodman and Gilman) fills this need for most. The Use of Antibiotics, now in a second edition, may be such a reference text. This book systematically and clearly details aspects of antimicrobial agents, including those used in mycobacterial, fungal, and viral illnesses, as well as conventional antibacterial agents.
