Since 1950 when the first edition of this biography of Pasteur was published, many biologists have shifted their concerns from the milieu intérieur and the events that occur therein to how these events are affected by the milieu extérieur, our environment. These newer concerns range from what congenital horrors might follow nuclear-testing fallout to cancers induced by industrial wastes. Dr. Dubos, author of this reprinted biography, is among these biologists, and in recent years he has ruminated over his ecologic anxieties in "The Despairing Optimist," a column in the Phi Beta Kappa quarterly, The American Scholar.
