The intensive care unit supplies highly trained medical, nursing, and paramedical personnel as well as diagnostic and monitoring equipment for close observation and intensive management of critically ill patients. The concept of the intensive care unit is well established in the United States but required justification by John C. Stoddart in the English hospital environment.
