Problems in any book composed by many authors are variation in quality, overlap, and degrees of completeness and accuracy in presentations of specific subjects. All of these problems occur in this book. Two other issues have to be considered: to whom is this "textbook" of valuemedical or other health professions students, housestaff, practicing physicians, or all medical students and practicing physicians?; and are some of these diseases poverty- (or life-style-) related rather than black-related?
Some chapters are strong, including that on hematologic diseases, where the content on sickle cell disease and hemoglobinopathies is exhaustive. But there is very little reference
