To the editor: In the recent Letter, "Bacteremia after Sigmoidoscopy: Another View" (Ann Intern Med 85:77-78, 1976), the recommendation made by Dr. Engeling and associates is not justified by their data.
They found no positive blood cultures in 54 cirrhotic patients undergoing sigmoidoscopy. They compare their results to those of LeFrock and associates (1), who found 19 instances of bacteremia in 200 patients undergoing sigmoidoscopy. From statistical analysis showing that P = 0.05, the statement is made that the reported results are "significantly different" from those of LeFrock and co-workers.
