Monoamine oxidase was isolated 50 years before this symposium was held. The evidence for this class of enzymes dates, however, from 1877! Mary Hare Bernheim described tyramine oxidase in 1928 while a postgraduate student at Newnham College at Cambridge. This symposium was held in her honor in London in 1975. S. S. Kety writes the introduction and discussion; the contributors are truly an international group.
Despite this symposium's narrow focus, the reader goes on from the title to find a most thorough and satisfying book. Many symposia suffer from an unevenness of focus, depth and integration. This one does not.
