Using basic physical and physiologic principles, Pierre Dejours has prepared a superbly written and referenced readable monograph on comparative respiratory physiology for advanced students. Starting with a review of energy expenditure and sources of energy, the text then provides the basic principles governing gas exchange. The middle chapters detail gas exchange at the pulmonary level and fully develop the interrelationships between the pulmonary and cardiovascular systems.
