To the editor: The recent article by Little and co-workers, "Amantadine Effect on Peripheral Airways Abnormalities in Influenza" (Ann Intern Med 85:177-182, 1976), suggests mechanisms by which amantadine might influence the recovery phase of an influenza infection. There are few or no data to support or refute the possible effects of amantadine on bronchial tone or airway reactivity, but there is evidence to suggest a role for amantadine in the modification of the inflammatory response of peripheral airways.
