To the editor: In his editorial, "What is Alcoholism Research?" (Ann Intern Med 85:821-823, 1976), Dr. Gordis states that treatment of alcoholism has not improved in any important way in 25 years, although alcoholism is becoming more prevalent. I wish to support this statement and other conclusions reached by Gordis with my own observations, looking at another facet of the problem. Unlike any other disease, there is no universal agreement among physicians who care for patients with alcoholic liver disease about the extent of the evaluation that they ought to give to establish a diagnosis.
