Clinical pathology has grown to maturity during the time since the original predecessor of this book, Clinical Pathology. Application and Interpretation, was published in 1950. The current title, The Laboratory in Clinical Medicine, and the emphasis on interpretation reflect the growing use of ancillary laboratory procedures other than those traditionally in the domain of clinical pathology or laboratory medicine. The multiplicity of laboratory tests and procedures currently available will bewilder even the most erudite practitioner, and the lack of formal instruction in laboratory medicine in many medical schools leaves the graduate without the necessary basic principles to assess the usefulness
