Twenty-one classic papers reprinted in facsimile. Most of them represent major advances directly (such as Ringer's paper on effects of blood constituents on contraction of the heart), whereas some were definitive reviews for their times (such as Samson Wright's 1932 review of afferent control of the circulation). The papers are presented in four groups—cardiac output, coronary metabolism and cardiac metabolism, the conduction system, and systemic circulation and its control—with each group introduced by the editor with a brief historical essay. Author and subject indexes. A valuable reprint for all libraries with holdings in physiology and cardiology.
