Prohormones, their conversion into active forms, heterogeneity of circulating peptide hormones, and hormone-receptors interactions are reviewed in this symposium. The heterogeneity of polypeptide hormones seems to play a physiologic role in regulation of potency and duration of action. The interconversion of hormone forms controls the effect. Specific polypeptide hormones discussed include insulin, glucagon, β-MSH, ACTH, growth hormone, parathyroid hormone, gastrin and somatostatin.
