There is a life cycle of medical education that may be described as follows:  medical students, being unable or unwilling to seek information from the literature and from available text books, press lecturers to present them with ever more detailed lecture outlines;  the lecturers comply, and the result is a syllabus, which is revised and printed each year in "limited edition";  after a number of years, it seems ridiculous not to publish the syllabus as a book (usually paperback), which medical students can purchase;  students find themselves facing a new textbook which brings the cycle back
