Sipple in 1961 (1) reported an endocrine tumor syndrome that is an association between thyroid carcinoma and pheochromocytoma. Later, it was ascertained that this combination of tumors represented a heritable entity that arose from the neuroectoderm. Weichert (2) reviewed the subject and developed a concept that the medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, pheochromocytoma, neurofibroma, and other associated tumors found in patients with multiple endocrine syndrome type 2 are forms of neuroectodermal dysplasia.
