We all develop from a state of helplessness and dependence to a state of relative mastery and autonomy. Just as it is said that our children are given in loan to us, so, equally, as children we must learn that parents and possessions are only temporary. To appreciate and care for what is ours only for a time—that is a task to be mastered in growing up. Failing that task, whether for reasons of envy or greed, can lead to bitter disappointments at what we falsely assumed was ours forever.
