The senior editor is the well-known Australian physiologist who has demonstrated that hypophysectomy shortens life span in the rat, whereas periodic treatment with physiological doses of cortisone can restore life span to normal. The focal point of this collection of articles by 38 authors from 12 countries is the concept that the site of the physiological control of aging lies in the hypothalamic-pituitary-peripheral endocrine target organ axis. The evidence presented consists of the aging pattern of the secretion of pituitary hormones in man, which involves declining titers for most pituitary hormones, but an increase in FSH/LH both in menopausal women
