To the editor: The concern raised by Dr. Barrett-Connor in the February issue (Ann Intern Med 86:236-237, 1977) is overdue. "Where do you come from," is another question often neglected, especially in the winter months when malaria can be easily misdiagnosed as influenza.
I have a foreign-student friend who failed to complete his malaria prophylaxis after he returned from his home country. Five months later, he developed recurrent fever and chills typical of quartan malaria. Because this occured in the winter months, the student health service diagnosed his illness as influenza and sent him home with instructions to take aspirin
