To the editor: I agree with the basic points of Dr. Gordis' editorial, "What is Alcoholism Research?" (Ann Intern Med 85:821-823, 1976), but some of Dr. Cantor's comments in his letter, "Who Will Care For The Alcoholic Patient?" (Ann Intern Med 86:362, 1977), bother me.
I agree that the physician's attitude toward the alcoholic patient can inhibit adequate evaluation, but it strikes me that the advocacy of liver biopsy to make a precise diagnosis is not an appropriate measure of the physician's completeness.
