The unique needs of adolescents have led to defining them as a special patient group. In caring for adolescents, several related dimensions of their uniqueness need to be addressed. These dimensions include a rapidly shifting psychologic status, profound physical developmental changes, unique social and family relationships, and characteristic age-defined illnesses. A fair measure of the quality of a book about adolescent medicine is how well it deals with one or several of these health dimensions. The Hospitalized Adolescent meets a standard of excellence, whereas Adolescent Medicine, with a few exceptions, fall short.
