The editors and their colleague-authors have put together a textbook that sets out to appeal to the medical student by interdigitating a background in medical microbiology with the real world of clinical infectious disease. The result is an exciting, useful, and readable text that should be of great value to the medical student and of some interest to house staff. The infectious disease specialist will do better to stick with established texts such as those edited by Hoeprich or by Top and Wehrle.
