To the editor: In the March 1977 issue a letter by Oster (1) stated that folic acid has been neglected for its xanthine oxidase-inhibiting effect by the medical profession. Dr. Oster further claimed that he has used this drug in 180 patients without any untoward effects.
I was fascinated by Dr. Oster's claims of a nontoxic, potent xanthine oxidase inhibitor. I have been unable, however, to find any documentation in the literature from controlled studies that it is effective as a xanthine oxidase inhibitor in treating hyperuricemia.
