The student of hepatic failure will find this volume an informative review of existing knowledge of conventional and experimental therapy but will not find many guidelines for rational management of the extremely ill patient. There are two chapters on pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of hepatic failure. These chapters are heavily referenced and quite complete in their review of the metabolism of amino acids and ammonia. Only hepatic encephalopathy is discussed, and other aspects of hepatic failure (for example, fluid retention) are not covered in detail.
