To the editor: We have been looking at the predictability of both gentamicin and digoxin serum-level pharmacokinetic equations. It has become clear that one first must analyze and select the nomogram or formula that best estimates creatinine clearance; most of the patients taking drugs do not have their actual creatinine clearances measured.
We have compared the creatinine clearance estimated by two nomograms and six formulae, including one recently proposed in this journal (1), with the measured corrected creatinine clearance in 37 obese and nonobese patients. Lean body mass was used in obese patients. If the patient's actual weight was less
